I know I'm not alone when I say how I waited to read Randi's next book. This author is able to take this character and portray her as a friend/relative we know and love. There's no surprises in Brenda's life, but there are when we see how she handles what comes her way.
The author, Randi Sherman, easily explores life in her stand-up comedy and storytelling. She honors our foibles and let's us laugh at the crazy things we do.
A Great Read!
I was more than happy to review this book not because of the cover (although the cover is kick-ass) but because of the message inside. Today's views of what pretty is - is pretty skewed. Things like the thigh and breast pen check ( which I think the boob/pen check just makes women of any smaller bust size feel inadequate which is completely unfair). Which, so what if your thighs though! Mine tough and it saves my phone from falling to the floor! I loved the message throughout this book. Yes, we need to work on being HEALTHY. And whatever size that is for you, great! I was a size 00 in junior high and constantly got teased and named called because of it. Having my daughter yeas later, I am now a size 9 and that is okay. This book is all about loving yourself, being comfortable in your skin all covered in humor. Which I loved. Brenda's story counters the judgement and critique that the world and ourselves gives each other for how we look, dress, etc. I really enjoyed Brenda's story and I think everyone else will too.
MY THOUGHTS
People can be so critical and so apt to tell a person what they should look like, what they should feel, how they should act and all that goes with it. Well Brenda Cankles has a dream of a life that she wants and she's going after it. This story is written in first person and is the raw truth, not tricked here and there, not finished to sound perfect. It is perfect the way it is. In this book you will possibly find yourself, a friend or relative striving for that warm satisfied feeling of being part of it all. Let's dare to be more like Brenda Cankles. Let them know they don't rule you. They can't take away your dreams and no matter what, you can be Big and Fabulous. You don't have to be that skinny little thing that wears a size 0 in order to be happy and go for your dreams. As with Brenda, some of us started out as that pudgy little kid and when those teen years came, we got a little more fuller until adulthood when we became full figured. There's nothing wrong with that. Own what you are and what you look like. OWN IT! Brenda does. She is big, strong and beautiful. Even though some try to keep her in the background, out of sight, Brenda will have none of that. She steps out. She doesn't apologize for who she is, and she shouldn't have to. She knows she is different and she is proud of that. There's no doubt, we all do some strange, odd things but so what? If we're not hurting anyone in the process, who's business is it? Stand up for who you are and give society no other choice other than to accept you, not change or hide you. There are many Brenda's out there in the world. Many Brendas who OWN IT! Many Brenda's we could learn from. SO if you want a little fun, a little reality, a little OWNING IT, then be sure to read this BIG and FABULOUS Life and Times of Brenda Cankles. You'll feel good after you do. Don't forget, no matter what you look like, no matter what quirky things you do, OWN IT! Remember you are fabulous and gorgeous, each in their own way.

"Big and Fabulous, the Life and Times of Brenda Cankles" by Randi Sherman reads like a memoir. It's told in first person from the point of view of the titular character, Brenda Cankles, and describes various events that happened to her throughout her life. The only thing that makes this not a true memoir is that Brenda Cankles isn't a real person.
Brenda goes throughout her whole life as being "the fat one". However, she doesn't let this bring her down. Instead, she owns it. Yes she may be overweight, but that doesn't mean that she should value herself less because of it. As a whole, the message is a good one. Love yourself regardless of society's standards and opinions and continue to live your life the way you want to. But even with the good overall theme, I couldn't really get into this book.
For one, I didn't really like Brenda as a character. On her quest to be "fabulous" she's very self-centered and does not come off as personable. Yes, I'm one for going for your dreams and being true to yourself, but that doesn't mean you should alienate those around you to the point you have no friends. I would have liked to see her have it all - self esteem, kindness, and the drive to achieve her goals.
"Big and Fabulous" was not the book I was expecting it to be. I thought it'd be more of a humorous third person narrative that told the story of Brenda overcoming other's opinions through silly misadventures that would keep me wanting to turn the page. Instead, I didn't find much humor in it, and I also didn't see much of a plot. While the story is about Brenda's life, there's no real driving factor for what she's aiming towards. Nothing to make the reader want to go on to see if she gets her prize she's been working so hard for.
So while it had some moments, and some good quotes about being who you are regardless of what others want you to be, this wasn't the book for me.
